GERD Risk Factors That Must Be Considered And Dealt With

by Jeff Martin

Discover in this article what risks may lie in wait for you with this illness :

The common denominator in GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) is the loss of strength of the muscle of the lower esophageal sphincter. The other common factor concerning GERD is heartburn. Many further distinct factors may be encountered. These include breathing disorders such as asthma, excessive weight, diabetes, expecting a baby, stomach contents being retained for too long, connective tissue disorders and hernias that are hiatal.

Here are some other elements increasing the danger levels:

Contributing danger factors for GERD include hernias that may be hiatal or diaphragmatic in nature, where part of the stomach distends beyond natural limits to move into the lowest chest. When this protrusion is big enough to affect the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, GERD can happen. Stomach contents with gastric juices then find their way back into the esophagus, and the result is severe heartburn.

As another consequence due to overweight, pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter causes it to malfunction and lets gastric acids reflux back to the esophagus, which engenders heartburn. GERD can therefore also come from being overweight. To avoid GERD, reduce any excess weight. Excess weight strains the stomach and the diaphragm that is in between the stomach and the abdomen.

Risk factors that come from lifestyle and diet habits:

Any excesses in smoking, drinking or eating will put you at risk of GERD. Poor lifestyle and bad diet habits can also have a negative impact.

Asthma is also indirectly involved because the medicaments that act to widen the air path also dilate the muscle of the lower esophageal sphincter muscle. This is what allows gastric juices to flow back to the esophagus. There is also the suggestion that excessive coughing and related breathing problems from asthma also put extra pressure on the stomach and increase the danger of GERD.

The danger grows greater still when pregnancy is a factor, as this boosts the production of progesterone, a hormone with laxative effect on several muscles, including that of the lower esophageal sphincter. The stomach is also under increased pressure during pregnancy. There may be considerably more danger of GERD for pregnant women therefore.

Getting to the Heart of the Matter with GERD:

Although treatments exist for GERD using conventional drugs, there are also holistic remedies. Conventional drugs unfortunately address only the superficial manifestation of the disease, and do not tackle the real underlying reasons. This is where holistic remedies are much more effective, because they treat the fundamental causes and truly allow GERD to be reduced or even eliminated.

GERD is a complex condition and the causes are also multiple, including diet habits, lifestyle, genetically inherited characteristics and even candida infections. Taking a holistic approach is therefore important to treat the body as a whole. This is why the holistic cures work so much better to eliminate GERD.

Surprising GERD Diet that Can Stop Your Heartburn

by Jeff Martin

Is there really a GERD diet that can help Acid Reflux victims to get rid of those annoying symptoms? Recent studies reinforce the hypothesis that Acid Reflux patients, especially those with less pronounced symptoms, can make major improvements to their medical condition by relatively simple diet changes. Modifying food plans to cure Acid Reflux is given strong support by classical and alternative medical thinking.

In general, GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) also known as Acid Reflux, is a malfunction of the digestive apparatus. Gastro esophageal reflux disease is the result of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) - a muscle behaving as a valve to close off the esophagus from the stomach - not functioning correctly and allowing acid matter to flow back, or “reflux”, from the stomach up to the esophagus. It is the gastric/digestive pathophysiology that indicates the link between eating and GERD treatment of this medical problem.

Acid Reflux symptoms vary from one person to another. Heartburn is what afflicts most patients - the burning feeling in the chest and/or throat that happens when refluxed stomach acid meets the esophageal lining. Patients report other symptoms as well, including swallowing problems, chest pain, hoarseness, an impression of something stuck at the back of the throat and dry coughing. Without treatment, Acid Reflux can lead to grave medical complications, such as ulcers, Barrett’s esophagus and even cancer. For these reasons, gastro esophageal reflux disease must be treated in a comprehensive and timely way.

Reducing weight and changing diet are both strongly advised for GERD patients as the initial step for dealing with this problem (and as part of a full holistic agenda).

Foods that contain certain bio-chemicals or that encourage their presence in the human body (high fat foods, mint, chocolate) should be dropped from a diet for Acid Reflux. These substances include a range of naturally occurring items which interfere with the correct working of the LES, such as dopamine, prostaglandins and acetylcholine. Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol also interfere in a similar fashion by forcing a reduction of pressure on the LES and so consumption should also be decreased. One of the main planks of a diet plan to deal with GERD is to avoid foods that have this debilitating effect on the LES muscle.

A further important principle of diet management for Acid Reflux is to take your final meal of the day at least three hours before going to bed, as food (above all dairy products) encourages acid secretion. Further to this, elevation of the head of the bed by 6 to 8 inches can decrease the exposure of the esophagus to acid.

Meals containing a lot of spice tend to irritate the mucosa in the esophagus. A lot of Acid Reflux victims say that their symptoms often degrade when they consume spicy foods or coffee too regularly.

Although a diet oriented towards GERD can give immediate alleviation, it should be remembered that a change in dietary patterns is not a solution in itself, especially in advanced cases of Acid Reflux. It is just a first, important step in a fully all-natural holistic program.

The holistic approach (specific herbs and vitamin supplements with a complete regime of diet guidelines, eliminating toxins and using Candida control guidelines) can resolve GERD in a natural way and prevent it from coming back, permanently and effectively. Were you aware that your painful and distressing symptoms of gastro esophageal reflux disease could be gotten rid of forever without any conventional medicine or “over the counter” medication?

How To Overcome Symptoms of Gerd and Acid Reflux Disease

by Tim Sheldon

The painful condition where the contents of the stomach want to flow back the way they came to cause heartburn is something we may all have experienced in our lives: it is called Acid Reflux. This is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract (digestive system) and even though this condition is often known by different names, they have similar symptoms. The digestive system uses hydrochloric acid to digest and process food. The disorder gives you a burning sensation in your chest near the heart and stomach, when the acid wants to return up the digestive tract.
