For those people suffering from recurrent heartburn, prevention is always the key to having a good day. Being able to identify the triggering factors of heartburn will enable the person to avoid such things and prevent the onset of heartburn from spoiling your day. Basically, heartburn is the occurrence of an Acid Reflux wherein the stomach contents, including acid, are being pushed back up into the esophagus. The acid reacts on the tender lining of the esophagus which causes a severe burning sensation.
There are many effective heartburn prevention steps that a person can take in order for them to safely enjoy good food and spirits without fear of the suffering that would usually come to pass during a night on the town. For those suffering from chronic indigestion, heartburn prevention will be part of their daily life. Among the many things that have to be avoided, caffeine and nicotine are two of the known triggers for heartburn and should be avoided by those who suffer frequent episodes of heartburn. Moreover, they are known to cause other health problems and thus it should be avoided, even if the person doesn’t suffer from heartburn.
Another cause of heartburn is the habit of eating way beyond the capacity of the stomach; this will also cause some of the food along with the acid to be pushed by into the esophagus. One good heartburn prevention method is by sitting up straight while dining so as to prevent the pressure build up in the stomach.
The Result of Individual Tolerance
A cast-iron stomach– this is what some people claim to have, as they flaunt their ability to eat anything and virtually everything without ever experiencing heartburn. But for those with a regular type stomach, heartburn prevention will always be an essential part of daily life. Absurd but true, some people may induce heartburn just by thinking of eating something spicy. While generally, eating spicy foods may not set off a heartburn attack; but those with a tender stomach would want to avoid it altogether.
Aside from the foods we eat, heartburn can also be linked to stress. When a person is extremely stressed, the body is forced to pump out additional acid which then causes heartburn. One method of heartburn prevention that should address this is to simply eliminate having a stressful life; however this is not always possible. A better technique in heartburn prevention would be learning how to control stress.
It is suggested that those suffering from frequent heartburn should keep a diary for at least three weeks, detailing every food and liquid intake and at what time it is taken. This helps in determining what foods cause heartburn. Prevention may be as simple as changing the foods being consumed or the time of day in which it is eaten.
